Afghans for Us
ABOUT THE PROJECT   |   PARTICIPATING KNITTERS (PASSWORD)   |   GALLERY

It’s a common lament among knitters that we never knit anything for ourselves. This Friendship Afghan project is a great opportunity to knit for a fun group of other knitters and receive many lovely gifts in return! If everyone holds up their end of the bargain, we should all end up with a hand-knitted afghan a year from now.

Square Exchange Schedule
March:Kick-off
Late May:4-5 squares due
Late August:5-6 squares due
December:remaining squares due
The Specifics

We are looking for 12-16 knitters to commit to this project.

Each participant will make 10" x 10" squares for all participants, plus one extra (the extras will be assembled and donated to charity).

We will use 100% acrylic, worsted weight yarn (cheap and easy care).

Each participant may specify a "season" of preferred color squares they'd like to receive (e.g. autumn shades, bright primary colors, winter pastels, various shades of blue, etc.); OR, you may state no preference and get a hodgepodge.

Each participant may choose the design(s) of the squares they give.

The Ground Rules

Each square is a gift to the recipient; do take care to ensure the squares you give are clean, blocked, and actually do measure 10" x 10" (use a ruler). Make sure to weave in your ends!

If your recipient has indicated a preference for the squares they receive, please do your best to meet their color requests; if you have questions about their preferences, contact them directly.

In order to avoid last-minute procrastination, we will try to meet up as a group for periodic square exchanges. A percentage of the total squares will be due at each exchange (number to be determined once we have commitments from everyone). Generally speaking, you should plan to complete 1-2 squares per month

If you cannot attend a square exchange, you must make arrangements to deliver your squares to their recipients (either by proxy or by mail).

We understand that sometimes life happens. If there will be delays in the delivery of your squares during the project, you should contact the recipients and let them know ASAP. Communication is important for this project to succeed; don’t keep people wondering why they haven’t received their squares.

A schedule for the year is pending, but all squares must be completed by the first week of December, 2005. We will meet again in Spring, 2006, for the grand afghan unveiling!

And don’t forget: we’re spending time doing something we love to do for people we like (or most likely will grow to like), so have fun with it! Thank you for participating; I’m excited to see what you all come up with.
