The organizations listed below are a few of the groups to whom I've donated time, money, and goods to help further their missions. While these are some I've personally donated to, you can find many more volunteer opportunities in your own towns by consulting Network for Good.

  • AIDS Walk Los Angeles
    an annual fund-raising event to support AIDS Project LA and other local AIDS service organizations.
    How you can help: participate in the walk, sponsor a walker

  • Alzheimer's Association
    the world leader in Alzheimer research and support. Through their national network of advocates and chapters, they advance research, improve services and care, create awareness of Alzheimer's dsease and mobilize support.
    How you can help: donates funds; participate in their annual Memory Walk; sponsor a walker

  • American Red Cross
    provides relief to victims of disasters and helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.
    How you can help: donate blood, money, or volunteer your time

  • American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
    offers national programs in humane education, public awareness, government advocacy, shelter support, and animal medical services and placement.

  • Avon Foundation Walk for Breast Cancer
    raises funding and awareness of breast cancer issues; provides grants for breast cancer support services, educational programs, and research organizations.

  • Boys & Girls Clubs of America
    offers more than 25 national programs for boys and girls in the areas of education, the environment, health, the arts, careers, alcohol/drug and pregnancy prevention, gang pregention, leadership development, and athletics.

  • City of Hope
    a biomedical research, treatment and educational institution, dedicated to the prevention and cure of cancer, HIV/AIDS, diabetes, and other life-threatening diseases.
    How you can help: donate blood; donate money; join the National Marrow Donor Program

  • Clothes the Deal
    distributes business clothing through service agencies that prepare people to enter the work force.
    How you can help: donate money, new or gently used business clothing.

  • Exotic Feline Breeding Compound / Feline Conservation Center
    dedicated to the protection and presetvation of the world's endangered felines through breeding and education programs, this non-profit organization is run entirely on public donations.
    How you can help: donate money, equipment/supplies; visit the cat house and bring a friend!

  • Give the Gift of Sight
    a family of charitable vision care programs donating free eye care and glasses in our communities and in developing countries.
    How you can help: donate money and/or used eyeglasses.

  • Habitat for Humanity
    a nonprofit, nondenominational Christian housing organization. Their goal is to build simple, decent, affordable houses in partnership with those who lack adequate shelter.

  • The HeArt Project
    faciliates long-term, dynamic learning experiences between professional artists and hard-to-reach teenagers. Through innovative art-making and connections with major cultural institutions and artists, The HeArt Project promotes positive self-expression, self-esteem and expanded opportunities for academic, career and personal growth.

  • Locks of Love
    a non-profit organization that provides hairpieces for financially disadvantaged children suffering from long-term medical hair loss. See my before and after pictures!

  • National Public Lands Day
    an annual event that brings volunteers together to improve the country's largest natural resource&emdash;its public lands.
    How you can help: volunteer are needed for a variety of tasks: invasive plant removal, trail maintenance, trash clean-up, plant/tree planting, and much more.

  • Reading by 9
    a multi-year campaign aimed at helping kindergarten through third-grade students read at grade level by the age of nine.
    How you can help: read with a kid; volunteer in classrooms and libraries; donate books; donate money

  • Rebuilding Together
    rebuilds and revitalizes low-income houses and communites.
    How you can help: find a chapter near you and participate in a RT project; donate money and/or building materials to a project

  • Sojourn Services
    provides support to battered women and their children through crisis intervention and shelter services, legal advocacy, support groups and education, and much more.
    How you can help: donate money, non-perishable food, toiletries, and/or non-violent toys for their children's programs.

  • Tree People
    their mission: to inspire the people of Los Angeles to take personal responsibility for the urban forest, training and supporting them as they plant and care for trees and improve the neighborhoods in which they live, learn, work and play.

  • Westside Food Bank
    provides food for hungry prople through more than 60 social service agencies serving the westside. These food-assistance charities reduce food waste, as well as provide much-needed meals for those who need it most.

  • The Wireless Foundation
    initiates and oversees philanthropic programs that utilize wireless technolody to help American communities.
